Protecting Your Feet When You Have Diabetes

Living with diabetes requires daily attention to foot health. High blood sugar can damage nerves and reduce circulation over time. When feeling decreases, small cuts or blisters may go unnoticed. Poor blood flow can also slow healing, allowing minor injuries to become serious wounds. Common concerns include dry, cracked skin, calluses, infections, and open sores. Changes in foot shape or skin color should also be taken seriously. Even a small problem can worsen quickly without proper care. Washing and drying the feet carefully, applying moisturizer to prevent cracking, and wearing well-fitting shoes are simple but important steps. Checking the bottoms of the feet each day helps detect changes. Regular visits with a podiatrist provide professional monitoring and early treatment when needed. Managing blood sugar levels also plays a key role in protecting foot health. If you have diabetes and notice redness, swelling, numbness, or a sore on your foot that is not healing, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.

Sever’s Disease and Growing Feet

Sever's disease affects children and teens, causing pain in the heel due to inflammation of the growth plate where the Achilles tendon attaches. It often develops during periods of rapid growth or increased physical activity, placing repeated stress on the heel. Symptoms include heel pain that worsens with running, jumping, or prolonged standing. Swelling and tenderness at the back of the heel are other symptoms. Risk factors include participation in sports, tight calf muscles, flat feet, and improper footwear that does not provide adequate support. Without proper care, discomfort may limit activity and affect mobility. A podiatrist can help by assessing foot mechanics, recommending supportive footwear or orthotics, and providing treatment to relieve pain. If your active child has heel pain, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can offer appropriate relief solutions.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see Ahmed Shoukry, DPM from The Foot Clinic. Our doctor can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Dealing With a Longer 2nd Toe

Some people have a second toe that appears longer than the big toe, often called Morton’s toe. It is actually caused by a shorter bone in the big toe and can change how weight is spread across the front of the foot. More pressure may shift onto the second toe. This can lead to pain, buildup of calluses, and soreness in the ball of the foot. This uneven pressure can affect how you walk and may place extra strain on nearby joints. A podiatrist can examine the foot, watch how you walk, and take X-rays to better understand bone position. Treatment options include custom shoe inserts to improve weight balance, protective padding, or surgery in more severe cases to adjust bone length. Early care can help reduce stress on the toes and improve comfort during daily activities. If you are experiencing such toe pain, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for treatment.

Toe pain can disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact Ahmed Shoukry, DPM of The Foot Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Causes Toe Pain?

Most severe toe pain is caused due to a sports injury, trauma from dropping something heavy on the toe, or bumping into something rigid. Other problems can develop over time for various reasons.

Toe pain can be caused by one or more ailments. The most common include:

  • Trauma
  • Sports injury
  • Wearing shoes that are too tight
  • Arthritis
  • Gout
  • Corns and calluses
  • Hammertoe
  • Bunions
  • Blisters
  • Ingrown toenails

  • Dislocations

When to See a Podiatrist

  • Severe pain
  • Persistent pain that lasts more than a week
  • Signs of infection
  • Continued swelling
  • Pain that prevents walking

Diagnosis

In many cases the cause of toe pain is obvious, but in others, a podiatrist may want to use more advanced methods to determine the problem. These can range from simple visual inspections and sensation tests to X-rays and MRI scans. Prior medical history, family medical history, and any recent physical traumatic events will all be taken into consideration for a proper diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatments for toe pain and injuries vary and may include shoe inserts, padding, taping, medicines, injections, and in some cases, surgery. If you believe that you have broken a toe, please see a podiatrist as soon as possible.

We Can Treat Your Foot or Ankle Pain

Foot or ankle pain can negatively affect your day-to-day life and can occur due to several different conditions. Pain can also be an indicator of a more serious underlying condition, which is why you should seek professional help as soon as you notice any abnormalities in your feet.

Types of Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a common infection that affects the nail and surrounding skin, leading to discoloration and nail deformity. Subungual fungus develops beneath the nail, causing thickening, crumbling, and dark debris. White superficial fungus appears as white patches on the nail surface that may become rough and powdery. Candida infections affect the nail and surrounding tissue, often leading to swelling, redness, and separation of the nail. Symptoms can include brittleness, odor, and discomfort. Risk factors include warm moist environments, poor foot hygiene, diabetes, and a weakened immune system. A podiatrist can identify the type of infection, provide targeted treatments, such as topical or oral medications, and offer guidance on proper foot care to prevent recurrence. If you notice changes in your toenails, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for a diagnosis and treatment.

If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact Ahmed Shoukry, DPM of The Foot Clinic. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Symptoms

  • Warped or oddly shaped nails
  • Yellowish nails
  • Loose/separated nail
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of nail fragments under the nail
  • Brittle, broken, thickened nail

Treatment

If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.

Prevention

In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.

In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.
